OVERVIEW
Satin fabric became popular in China during the middle ages and was named after the port where it originated, Zaitum. Once reserved for the rich, it is now widely available and used for a variety of products.
The term ‘satin’ refers to a specific weave of fabric rather than the actual fabric material itself. It is one of the 3 fundamental fabric weaves which also includes plain weave and twill weave. Satin is characterized by a smooth, glossy surface on one side, with a duller surface on the other side although double-sided satin is glossy on both sides. Satin weaves are known for their soft and luxurious feel as well as these characteristics:
- Beautiful drape: makes it ideal for dresses, decorations and curtains.
- Glossy: satin weaves typically have a shiny right side and a matte underside.
- Durability: long filament fibers create a weave which is stronger than plain weave fabrics.
- Wrinkle Resistant: satin doesn’t wrinkle as easily as other fabric weaves.
Historically, satin was produced using silk. Today, satin is produced by weaving filament fibers (long continuous lengths) of polyester, nylon or silk - or a blend of these fibers together. Our satin products are made using polyester. Polyester is a synthetic fiber which is woven to make fabric using the satin weave technique. The result is satin polyester. Many people today don’t realize that satin isn’t a fabric at all, but a specific weave type. The satin weaving technique varies and there are many variations which are used for different applications such as:
